Swan House
Gloucestershire, England

Swan House is a sumptuous 5 star rated country house with a Gold Award for the exceptional quality of accommodation and customer service.
It dates from the mid 17th century in possibly the Cotswolds' prettiest village, near Bibury, between Cirencester, Burford and Stow, all quintessential Cotswold towns. It is set in large gardens with a formal long herbaceous border, wild garden, orchard, river frontage and spring fed trout lake.
The house has 6 bedrooms (4 double and 2 twins), 4 bathrooms, large hall/ sitting room, laundry room, boot room, fully fitted kitchen, dining room with wood burning stove and 36' drawing room also with wood burning stove, grand piano and extensive views over the gardens and lake.
The master bedroom has a four poster bed and there is a large terrace for informal summer dining and a gas fired barbecue. The property is centrally heated throughout with constant hot water. There are superb dining pubs and restaurants nearby with easy access to both Bath and Stratford.

Unusual or interesting place in the area The Cotswolds were settled by the Romans 2000 years ago - Cirencester is an old Roman town, the -cester ending indicating a Roman military settlement. Evidence of Roman settlements can be seen at the Corinium Museum, Cirencester, Gloucestershire GL7 2BX, phone number +44 1285 655611, which has an extensive collection of Roman mosaics. It is also well worth a visit to the Chedworth Roman Villa at Yanworth, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire GL 54 3LG phone number +44 1242 890256. There you can see the extensive remains of a fairly large Roman villa, and appreciate the sophistication of Roman construction, including underfloor heating, hot baths and even washrooms with flush toilets.

One thing visitors should not miss The Cotswolds wealth was originally based on sheep farming and the area was well known in the middle ages for its wool production. Some of this wealth was used to build churches - almost each village has one and for a visitor from North America, they are really worth seeing. I would pick out the churches in Cirencester, Northleach and Bibury as well worth a visit. The church in Bibury is over 1000 years old. There are many others that are also worth seeing and all within easy travelling distance from Winson, where Swan House is situated.
